Do I have to pay a lawyer if I just have an enquiry?

If you are unsure of your rights or obligations and would like some prelminary legal advice, we would be happy to see you for 15 minutes for a minimal charge.

On a complex issue, which would take more than 15 minutes to review, an hourly rate would apply.

Do you charge an hourly fee for all work you do?

In many instances, we will quote a price which includes our legal fee, disbursements (items we pay out of our pocket on your behalf, such as photocopies, courier charges, long distance telephone etc) and federal and provincial taxes. These quoted prices are most frequently for standard real estate transactions, wills and incorporating companies. In other instances we will estimate our fees and the disbursements we feel we would reasonably incur, however our fees and disbursements may increase (or decrease) depending on the complexity of the particular matter.

On some files, we will ask for a retainer prior to commencing any work on your behalf.

What is a retainer?

A retainer is an amount of money that is paid by a client as a deposit towards the fees that will be charged and disbursements that will be incurred by the lawyer on your behalf. Accounts submitted to you will be paid from the retainer, which may need to be replenished from time to time.
Why do I need a Will?
If you die without making a legally binding will, the law will state who will receive your estate. This includes your money and everything you own. If you have minor children (under the age of 19), if you have not named a legal guardian to look after them if both you and your spouse should die while they are minors, then the government will decide who is best suited to look after them.

A will also ensures that your family will know exactly what your wishes are. When preparing you will, your lawyer will also advise you about what rights your spouse and children have, and in the cases of blended families, what rights step-children have.
